The Cook Islands in the Polynesian triangle are made up of 15 islands spread across a vast piece of the Pacific Ocean. The Islands south to north are Mangaia, Rarotonga, Mauke, Atiu, Takutea, Mitiaro, Manuae, Aitutaki, Palmerston, Suwarrow, Nassau, Pukapuka, Manihiki, Rakahanga and Penhryn. The islands vary in their landscape, with Rarotonga having stunning mountainous peaks to other islands with low lying coral atolls. Rarotonga is the largest of all of the islands and it is here that you will find the capital called Avarua. Within the Cook Islands hotel suites are available to suit every kind of budget.
The island of Rarotonga is a vibrant and colorful place at the heart of the Cook Islands. It is circular in shape and just 19.8 miles in its circumference. The dominating landscape of the island is the high mountains, which are some 2,142 feet high. On the heights of these mountains are lots of lush rainforests which along with the mountains themselves provide a stunning backdrop to the tropical palm tree lined shores. Hiring a moped is a popular way to explore the island; there are two main roads to drive on; the Ara Tapu road allows you to drive around the outer circle of the island. On this road trip you will be able to see the villages and sandy beaches. You could also drive along the inner road called Te Ara o Toi; this will lead you around less residential areas with plenty of pawpaw, banana and taro fields as well as local farms. For those who prefer not to drive, there is an island bus; this is perfect for seeing all that the island has to offer in a budget friendly manner.
The Cook Islands hotel locations tend to be very central, with easy access to all the local sights. The town of Avarua on the island is the main town and the economic center of the Islands. Throughout the day it has a very bustling, friendly atmosphere with a wide range of banks, cafes, shops and facilities for visitors. The Avatiu Harbor is just a short walk away from the center of Avarua town to the north of the Island and is a hub of activity and entertainment, with yachts coming to the island from all over the world as well as fishing boats and cruise liners docking here regularly.
Atiu is known as the island of legends and birds and is the third biggest island. It forms a section of the southern part of the Cook Islands. Atiu is a volcanic island consisting of a flat topped mound of volcanic rock which is surrounded by a coral limestone reef which is raised; this reef is known as a Makatea. This Makatea circles the island and ranges in width from 164 feet to 328 feet. There are plenty of sandy coves to relax in. For those who are feeling energetic and want to explore the island, they will find a myriad of coral atoll, caves, cliffs, maketea as well as white sandy beaches. The barrier reef can be found near to the shoreline and the main four villages, called Teenui, Mapumai, Tengatangi and Areroa are close together on the main plateau about 232 feet above sea level. Anatakitaki Cave is a must see when on the island; it is exquisitely adorned with Stalactites, Stalagmites and also houses the rare Kopeka bird. Raka's Cave is another one to visit; it has fifteen chambers to explore and there are regular tours of the cave which will explain the history and legends surrounding it.
Mangaia is the most southern of the islands and is the second biggest. It is the oldest island and is thought to be 19 million years old. The island is one of the most serene and beautiful; it has a stunning combination of lush green forestry inland and a rugged coastline and blue waters on the exterior. This is the perfect island to visit for those who need a break from the fast paced rush of city life; it is the very essence of peace and quiet. In terms of activities, you can spend the day trekking along the coast or within the forests, go swimming or simply relax on the beach and soak up the calming atmosphere. There are more crops of pineapples, taro, kumara and vegetables than there are houses.
